Activating your travel card – Transportation expenses
If your application for a TotalAssist transportation grant is approved, you will receive a pre-paid VISA debit card for the full grant award amount in the mail in 15-20 business days from your approval date. Use your pre-paid VISA debit card to pay for expenses covered by your transportation grant.
You do not need to submit claims for transportation grant covered expenses. Your pre-paid VISA debit card can only be used for approved merchant categories.
Activate your pre-paid VISA card to use it
Have your patient ID and approval date on hand to activate your card. This information can be found in your welcome packet, or in your portal account.
How to activate your VISA card:
- Online 24/7: Use the quick action tools found at Portal.TotalAssist.org. You don’t need to login, or have a portal account, to activate your card.
- By phone: Call us at 866-512-3861 to activate your card, Monday-Friday, 8:30 am to 5:30pm ET.
What this grant pays for
Your transportation grant pre-paid VISA debit card can be used for covered travel and lodging expenses to and from activities that support your overall health, such as medical appointments, pharmacy visits, and grocery stores.
- Public transportation and transit, such as railways, buses, and ferries
- Car and truck sales, service, repairs, parts, and leasing
- Tires and tire repairs
- Auto body repairs
- Towing services
- Gas (limited to $150 per day)
- Electric vehicle (EV) charging
- Parking fees, including lots, meters, and garages
- Tolls and bridge fees
- Ambulance services, taxis
- Bicycle shops, sales and service
- Airfare
- Car rentals
- Lodging and accommodation, including hotels, motels, trailer parks and campgrounds
- Motorhome or RV rentals
You cannot use your transportation grant pre-paid card to pay for:
- Purchases made at restaurants, retail stores, or grocery stores
- Medical or pharmacy expenses
- Medication copays, coinsurance, and deductibles
- Health, dental, vision, or life insurance premiums
- Medical office visit or administration charges
