How TotalAssist helps you
TotalAssist helps you reduce the financial burden of out-of-pocket healthcare costs so you can focus on your care, not the complexity of the system.

What is TotalAssist?
Covering nearly 150 serious and chronic conditions, TotalAssist is the nation’s most comprehensive charitable patient assistance program. Through TotalAssist, Patient Advocate Foundation helps patients afford the cost of healthcare with grants to eligible individuals. TotalAssist grants provide patients with flexible-use funding.

What it pays for
Some funds may vary. Find your fund to check covered expenses and eligibility requirements specific to that fund.
You can use your TotalAssist grant for these eligible out-of-pocket healthcare costs:
- Medication copays, coinsurance, and deductibles (for medications on your fund’s approved medications list)
- Health insurance premiums
- Office visit charges the day of treatment
- Administration charges related to treatment
TotalAssist grants cannot be used to pay for:
- Medications or products not covered by insurance or those that have been paid by insurance at 100%
- Dental, vision, or life insurance premiums
- Prescriptions when a discount prescription card is used
- Medical services such as lab work, radiation therapy, scans, and surgery
What is financial assistance?
Through financial assistance programs like TotalAssist, individuals who meet eligibility guidelines can receive grants to cover out-of-pocket expenses.
Grants cover your out-of-pocket expenses
The TotalAssist program covers eligible healthcare and medical costs that aren’t fully covered by your insurance, or that must be paid out-of-pocket even with insurance.
It’s not a loan or discount
Our grants are charitable funding awarded to individuals, not a loan or discount program.
It comes from charitable funding
TotalAssist grants are awarded by Patient Advocate Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization, and are generally not considered taxable income.
Your grant is not taxable income
TotalAssist grants come from a charitable nonprofit and are issued as need-based gifts. Under current IRS guidance, they are not considered taxable income and do not affect your eligibility for other assistance programs.
