About the disease

Solid organ transplantation is a medical procedure that removes a diseased organ from a body and re-implants a viable, healthy organ into the body of a recipient, restoring proper function of that body system. This is a life-saving or prolonging life therapy for patients with end-stage organ diseases for hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide. People who have had an organ transplant need antirejection or immunosuppressive medications. They weaken your immune system and decrease your body’s ability to destroy your new organ. But they also decrease how well your body can fight infections, cancer, and other diseases.
